St Rita’s Varsity Boys went 3-1 at Bosco Tech to finish fifth in the sixteen team tournament. In the first round, the Raiders defeated St Emydius of Lynwood 68-24. In round two however, St Rita had to play St James of Torrance. The Raiders had narrowly defeated them in the semifinals of the CYO Football Playoffs. St. James was much bigger than we were in football, and looked even bigger on the basketball court. We held a small lead in a defensive struggle for the majority of the game before falling behind near the end. Scores by Blake Howard and then Anthony Camacho with 7.8 seconds left gave St Rita a one point lead. A ball went out of bounds to St James with 1.7 seconds remaining and they managed to get two shots off and garner a 27-26 buzzer beating win.
Round three saw the Raiders defeat St Anthony of San Gabriel 66-16. Blake Howard scored 24 points in a little over half a game. In the fifth place game, the Raiders played a scrappy team from Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. An unusual number of turnovers kept the game close. We opened up a nine point lead with a couple of minutes remaining. Behind Blake Howard’s 28 points, we claimed a 46-33 victory.
Our JV team also played in the varsity tournament and although winless, they got valuable experience and made significant improvement. Having two teams play in the tournament meant everyone got considerable playing time. It also meant that all 16 players who participated scored. A special “Thank you” goes out to Cyndy Amerio who helped coach the JV’s as well as assisting with score keeping.
The leading varsity scorers were Blake Howard with 73 points, Andy Garriola with 34, Anthony Camacho with 27 and Luca Farroni with 21. Andrew Amerio and Christian Locatelli led the JV’s in scoring.
